Dimes as ammo?
Has anyone heard of loading dimes in 12 ga. shells ? Heard someone babble this and thought it might be a good alternative to lead ha ha ha !!!

Re: Dimes as ammo?
I've shot a sock full of pennies out of a homemade muzzle loading cannon before. It will clear a path in a jungle!

Re: Dimes as ammo?
That probably came from the test of a 12 gauge choke. If a dime will not go in the muzzle, it is a full choke. If the dime will go into the muzzle it is modified choke or improved cylinder choke.

That sounds like good entertainment! Thanks for the reply, I usually talk to myself to save on typing. I thought that until you answered. :-)

Re: Dimes as ammo?
Heard it on "Young Guns" ...or was it Young Guns 2?
They mentioned it, then shot someone and said "Best dollar twenty I ever spent" ...or something like that. Never ACTUALLY heard of anyone doing it. The penny concept is tempting. |
Re: Dimes as ammo?
Post 82 pennies ! Were you there or what ? Like I said I heard someone babbling and it was pertaining to that movie. I'd like to pay my property tax like this. :-)

Use only silver ones, like the Lone Ranger.:musicus:

Charles Bronson and Nichols come to mind.
Do not know how shooting coins works. If you try let us know. E-A |
Re: Dimes as ammo?
I was not sensitive to copper pennies at the time so they were unsorted. :musicus:
I think in Young Guns, working strictly from distant memory, that is was something more like a .45-70 or .410 shotgun as a dime is much closer in diameter to those than it is to a 12ga. In fact the .45-70 was a famous buffalo gun and the reference to the dimes was in regards to buffalo hunting IIRC. $1.20 in dimes back then would be worth about $12 now, that's an expensive load. I guess it would be cheap compared to the relative meat and other value of a dead buffalo. Anyway the density here is low, the projectile is not aerodynamic, the effective range is short. If you want that kind of an effect look up the Terminator X or some other wild specialty load for the 12ga like the Piranaha or something. |

Thanks Rev.

Re: Dimes as ammo?
I saw a show, may have been that western show on The History Channel. Anyway they tried out the dime theory and it wasn't worth two cents. The pattern was abysmal and the penetration wasn't enough to knock down a flea. Maybe Mythbusters, they like their ballistics gel.

Re: Dimes as ammo?
There was a company called Safety Disc Ammo that sold this basic consept but it did not work well at all, verry poor balistics. Ill stick with slugs & 00

Re: Dimes as ammo?
I remember seeing 3" mag 12 ga. shells loaded up with 6-8 large split shot sinkers crimped around some very high test monofiliment fishing line forming an 8 inch circle when laid out on a table.
I was about 15 at the time. They were at my friends house when we were scrounging around for duck loads. His dad was a cop and two of his brothers were just back from Viet Nam so I don't know if it was a police or military idea. Someone was loading them up that way on a handloader in the garage. Never shot one and don't know what they were used for. Seems like it might be a good way to keep the pattern focused if it held together. Dimes make no sense at all to me. |
